Be Aware of Scam Artists

October 25, 2011

Please be advised of the following warning issued by MidAmerican Energy Company. They are warning customers to be aware of scam artists posing as utility workers in the Iowa City, Coralville and Quad Cities areas.

Police responded to scams that involved people calling customers or going door-to-door posing as MidAmerican customer service representatives, saying the customers received an unsigned payment check. The caller then asked for a credit card payment over the phone and threatened to disconnect service by midnight if the payment was not made, according to a news release.

Other scam operations have involved people saying they are affiliated with MidAmerican Energy and trying to sell air conditioning units.

Access Energy Cooperative employees all carry a proper ID issued by Access Energy Cooperative. Members should ask for proper identification that should look like the one below. Any questions about service work, a bill payment or an appointment at their home or business can be verified by calling Access Energy Cooperative’s customer service line at 866-242-4232.

If residents receive suspicious calls or if there is a suspicious person in your neighborhood, contact local police.
