Be sure to know where utility poles are located to avoid damaging electrical equipment. Some things to think about before you light the match to prevent burn-related damage to power poles:

  1. Plan before you begin.
  2. Check the weather forecast for wind. Also, you should burn when relative humidity level is 40 percent or higher.
  3. Clear all vegetation and weeds at least four feet around the base of any utility poles in the area of burning.
  4. Wet the base of any poles in the vicinity with water before burning.
